This stela was found in the Peten, Guatemala, 8
kilometers southwest of the village of Dolores. The piece is dated in
the mid-classic Mayan period 588 A.D.
The hieroglyphic figures found on this stela are
extremely well preserved in high relief.
The detail portrayed is
exquisite with each glyph exhibiting the classic period components
that render the glyphs readable. The vigesimal long count depicts the
date; animal (jaguar) and
anthropomorphic head figures connote various
aspects of the long count date including lunations and other
astronomical events.

hieroglyphs incorporated into a stucco wall flanking a fireplace or an
outdoor arched entryway.
